With the start of the 2019 racing season fast approaching, its shaping up to be just as exciting as last year!
For 2019 the calender remains much the same as 2018. The class will visit the Historic Brands Hatch circuit once again as well as both of the challenging and fast county Down circuits, Kirkistown and Bishopscourt. The class will also return to Mondello Park, Ireland’s main racing venue for a number of rounds.
This season three new drivers are confirmed to be joining the grid so far. The 2017 Formula Sheane scholarship champion Leslie Shaw will be joining the grid. Leslie raced an Irish Supercar at the 2018 Brands Hatch FF1600 festival and since then has been hooked!
The second new driver to join the grid is Ginetta Junior Ireland 2018 runner up, Rob Parks. Rob also had his first taste of an Irish Supercar at the 2018 Brands Hatch formula ford festival and loved it! “I am really looking forward to getting on the Irish Supercar grid for 2019, without a doubt its one of the most enjoyable and competitive racing classes in Ireland and the perfect step up for Ginetta Junior Ireland graduates” was what Rob had to say.
Paul Parr also joins the grid this year, making a change from his more recent seasons racing in the British Autograss series and following on from Rallying in 2006 & 2007. Paul is excited to be joining the Irish Supercar grid having grown up watching the RTs racing and is now getting his chance to race his own RT Supercar.
Many of 2018’s drivers return this year to continue their fight for the Championship title. 2018 Champion, Alan Watkins, will be looking to defend his title and remain top of the leaderboard for the year ahead. The fight last year however was a close one and we have no doubt Gary Corcoran will be hot on his heels to whip the Champions trophy from his grasp. Charlie Linnane also returns this year, after having a bad start to his 2018 season we can be sure he’s showing up to prove he’s not one to forget about on the points table for 2019.
It will definitely be an interesting racing season, with some quick new drivers joining the class and making it very difficult to tell who will be crowned Champion at the end. One things for sure – this will be a season not to be missed!
